People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals state that 1 billion rabbits and 2 million cats and dogs are killed each year for fur, many for toys, and whilst some are gassed, beaten or electrocuted, some are skinned alive. More than one billion animals are slaughtered for the global leather industry every year, most have led very uncomfortable lives.
Mink, Chinchilla, Fox, Rabbit, Cats and Dogs are used in the fur trade, often caught in vicious traps, clubbed to death, electrocuted by mouth or anus - some are skinned alive. EU farmers are large producers of fur. 6,000 fur farms in the EU! Some fur is labelled as faux fur because it is cheaper to use real animal skin than artificial fur!
Fur is treated chemically and those who are ecologically minded should avoid it. In the UK, Topshop, Selfridges, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols and All Saints have a strict 'no fur' policy and designers, Stella McCartney. Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Vivienne Westwood all refuse to work with animal pelts as there are so many options available for serviceable and enjoyable fashion fabrics.
